One is encryption-first. One is client-workflow-first.
Tresorit is end-to-end encrypted cloud storage and sharing, built so that the provider cannot read your files. Droplana is a client document portal - one private, persistent portal per client for two-way document exchange, with checklists, per-file comments and no account for the client. If encryption architecture is your deciding factor, this page will probably send you to Tresorit. If the client-side workflow is, it will not.
Start with the part where Tresorit wins
Most comparison pages bury the competitor's advantage. This one is going first, because if it applies to you the rest of the page does not matter.
Tresorit encrypts files on your device before they are uploaded. The provider holds no key that can read your content. That is a genuinely different security model from "encrypted at rest by the provider," and it changes what a breach of the provider means: with a zero-knowledge architecture, an attacker who takes the storage takes ciphertext and nothing else.
Droplana does not do this. We encrypt files at rest with AES-256, using a key derived per client with HKDF-SHA256 from a master key and the client's ID, never stored. Traffic is TLS. The database, application configuration and logs sit on LUKS-encrypted volumes. That is a real protection against a storage-platform breach. It is not protection against a compromise of the application host itself, because the master key lives there next to the storage credentials, and we say so on our security page rather than rounding it up to something that sounds better.
If your threat model requires that the vendor cannot read your files - because of the nature of the work, a client contract, or a specific regulatory position - Tresorit meets that requirement and we do not. Go and use it. The rest of this page is for people whose deciding factor is something else.
What each tool is organised around
That difference in encryption is not the interesting one for most buyers. This is.
Tresorit is organised around files and folders. It is encrypted cloud storage with sharing on top: sync a folder, share a link, send a file request, manage access. The mental model is a drive, and a very well-secured one.
Droplana is organised around the client. There is no folder tree. There is a list of clients, and each of them has one portal that holds everything to do with them: what you have sent, what they have sent back, the checklist of what is still missing, the comments on individual files, the status of each one. The organising layer is the relationship, not the directory.
That sounds like a small distinction and is not. When a client emails asking about the statement you sent in March, "which folder was that in" and "open their portal" are different amounts of work, and the difference compounds across a hundred clients.

The client-side experience
This is where the two tools feel least alike.
Sending a client a Tresorit link works. Sending a hundred clients a hundred links, over four years, and then having any of them find the right one again - that is the part that gets expensive. Encrypted sharing solves the security problem well and leaves the retrieval problem to whoever is on the other end.
A Droplana client has one link. It is the same link in month one and month forty. When they open it they see everything relevant to them, a checklist of what you are still waiting on, and an upload button. There is no account to create, no password to reset, and nothing to install. Depending on the security level you choose, they confirm access by email magic link or by signing in with a Google or Microsoft account they already use, and the device is remembered for 90 days after that.
You choose the level. New accounts default to Strict, which means email verification on every new device. Controlled permits one-time or email magic links only. Relaxed additionally permits permanent links, for less sensitive work.
The other detail that matters more than it should: clients can photograph paper with their phone directly into the portal. The number of onboardings that stall because someone does not own a scanner is much larger than it ought to be.
Pricing shapes
Tresorit prices per user per month across several business tiers. That is a coherent model for a storage product your team lives in - everyone syncs, everyone shares, cost tracks headcount.
Droplana prices per business. Free covers 3 clients and 2 GB. Solo is 19 EUR per month plus tax, unlimited clients, 50 GB. Practice is 49 EUR, 250 GB, 5 seats including the owner. Studio is 99 EUR, 1 TB, 15 seats. Annual billing costs ten months. Each Storage add-on adds 500 GB and raises the maximum file size to 5 GB. There is no per-client fee and no overage billing - when storage runs out, new uploads stop and existing files remain accessible.
The models diverge depending on where your volume is. If you have twelve staff and forty clients, headcount pricing is reasonable. If you have two staff and four hundred clients, it prices the wrong axis of your business entirely.
What Droplana does not do
Stated plainly, because a comparison that only lists strengths is not a comparison.
- No end-to-end encryption. Covered above. This is the big one.
- No desktop or mobile sync. No folder on your laptop mirroring the server.
- No public API, no integrations. Nothing connects automatically to anything else.
- Not general storage. Storage is capped per plan and Droplana is not built to be your firm's drive.
- Not a qualified e-signature provider. In-browser signing records who signed, when, from what IP and with which login, and gives every signature a public verification page with a file-hash comparison. It is not a certificate-based or qualified signature and we do not describe it as tamper-proof.
- Not for internal team collaboration. The portal is client-facing. Your team works in your own tools.
Who should pick which
Pick Tresorit if: zero-knowledge encryption is a stated requirement; you want an encrypted drive your team syncs to; your sharing is mostly ad hoc rather than tied to long-running client relationships; or you need Swiss data residency specifically.
Pick Droplana if: your pain is client-side rather than cryptographic; you are managing many ongoing client relationships and want one permanent place per client; the least technical client sets the pace and every account creation costs you emails; you want the price to stop moving when the client list grows; or you want documents to arrive with a checklist rather than as a surprise.
Use both if: you want an encrypted internal store and a clean client-facing surface. They sit at different points in the workflow and there is no real overlap to resolve.
The accounting practices page and the legal page go into what the per-client structure looks like in daily use, and the client portal guide covers how to evaluate this category generally.
