Why this page is short

Comparison pages usually exist because two products compete. This one exists because the search happens, not because the choice is close.

SafeSend Returns automates one workflow: assembling a finished US tax return, delivering it to the client and getting it signed back. Everything in the product serves that sequence. The broader SafeSend One packages also include client portals and secure file transfer, with collection tools that vary by package, so general exchange is not something only Droplana offers.

Droplana is a client document portal for professional service businesses. It has no concept of a tax return, no connection to any tax preparation software and no US filing capability of any kind.

If you are a US firm trying to stop sending paper returns, buy the product built for that. Nothing on this page should talk you out of it.

The narrow case where the comparison is real

There is one, and it is why people land here.

Some firms search for tax return delivery software when the actual problem is broader: the documents that arrive before the return exists, the questions during the work, the things clients ask for in July, and the fact that all of it currently runs through email. A return delivery tool covers the last step of a months-long process.

If that is closer to your situation, first check what your SafeSend package already covers. If a separate place for that traffic is still needed, the shape you want is a portal rather than a delivery workflow: one private space per client that stays put all year, holds what they sent you and what you sent back, and shows them what is still outstanding.

That is what Droplana is. It will not deliver a 1040.

On due dates: a reminder is prepared two days before the date and on the date, and reaches the client with their next email, which can be later that day or the next day. The business can switch these reminders off and the client can opt out.

On signing, so nobody is misled

Droplana signs PDFs in the browser. An identified business user or client types, draws or uploads a signature and places it on the page. The signed file is saved as a new file with the original kept, carrying a caption and a QR code, and every signature is recorded on the server with who signed, when, from what IP and which login they used. Anyone can check a signature on a public verification page that includes a hash comparison of the file.

Signing requires an email-identified session: a client holding only a permanent or one-time link cannot sign until they verify by email magic link, Google or Microsoft.

What it is not: certificate-based, qualified, notarised, or backed by any identity verification beyond the login. It has no knowledge-based authentication, and it is not a replacement for a tax-signing workflow. If a regulator has told you what your signature process must satisfy, take that document as the requirement, not a vendor page.

What Droplana does not do

• Nothing tax-specific. No return assembly, no e-filing, no tax signing.
• No tax software connection. Moving files between systems is manual.
• Logo only, not full branding. Your logo appears in the portal header on every plan, but there is no custom domain or accent colour.
• Not project management, not general storage, not an archive.

Who should pick which

Pick SafeSend Returns if you are a US firm delivering tax returns and want that workflow automated end to end. That is the whole criterion, and it is a good product for it.

Pick Droplana if your problem is the year-round document traffic rather than one delivery event, your SafeSend package does not cover it, and you want one permanent portal per client with a checklist and per-file comments, clients who never create an account, and files stored in Germany by an EU company. If you use both, tell clients which documents belong where.

Questions before you choose

Can Droplana replace SafeSend Returns?

No. Droplana does not assemble, deliver or sign tax returns, has no tax software integration and no knowledge-based authentication. If you are a US firm looking to automate return delivery, SafeSend Returns solves that problem and Droplana does not. The two only overlap if what you need is a general document portal for the rest of the year.

Can Droplana sign tax forms?

Not as a tax-signing product. Droplana signs a PDF in the browser and records who signed, when, from what IP and with which login, with a public verification page including a file-hash comparison. There is no certificate, no knowledge-based authentication and no identity verification beyond the login. If your tax signing process has specific requirements, use a tool built for them.

Would a firm need both products?

Possibly, but first check the collection and portal functions in your SafeSend package, since SafeSend One packages also include client portals and secure file transfer. Adding Droplana means another client destination and manual transfers, not an integrated tax workflow.

What does Droplana do outside tax season?

It is built for the whole year and both directions. Each client has one private, persistent portal with a checklist of what is still outstanding, per-file comments, file status and phone photo upload. It is not tied to a return or a filing season. Droplana is an EU company storing files on Hetzner infrastructure in Germany, with a Data Processing Agreement on every plan.

Plans and limits

Paid plans include unlimited clients: Solo EUR19/month or EUR190/year, Practice EUR49/month or EUR490/year, Studio EUR99/month or EUR990/year, plus tax. Free covers 3 clients, 2 GB and files up to 100 MB, and keeps each file for up to 180 days after upload. There is no per-client or per-return fee.

On Free, each file expires 180 days after upload. Your clients and their access stay active, so you can keep sharing new files. Active paid plans have no plan-imposed retention limit. Expiry settings, deletion and cancellation rules still apply; a persistent portal address does not guarantee permanent file availability. Team sizes include you. No setup fees or automatic overage charges. Prices exclude applicable tax.
