One replaces your practice software. One replaces your inbox
TaxDome is practice management for accounting firms: CRM, workflow, jobs, billing, e-signature and a client portal on the web and in mobile apps. Droplana is the document portal on its own: each client gets one private portal to send and receive documents, with no account to create. If you are replacing how your firm runs, TaxDome is a serious contender. If you already have the rest and the document exchange is what hurts, the comparison is more interesting.
Published by Droplana, one of the products compared. TaxDome's pricing and feature pages checked September 21, 2026. The screenshot uses fictional data and is not a customer result.
Do not compare these on features
TaxDome will win that comparison, and it should. It is practice management: CRM, job pipelines and workflow, time and billing, payments, e-signature, document management and a client portal on the web and in mobile apps. It is built to run an accounting firm end to end.
Droplana is one piece: the client-facing document portal. No CRM, no billing, no jobs, no workflow.
So a feature-count argument is not available to us and we are not going to attempt one. The useful question is a different one: are you replacing your practice software, or are you replacing your inbox?
The cost that does not appear on the pricing page
Replacing the operating system of a firm takes time. It needs partner attention, staff training, data migration, and a period where the firm is slower than it was. How long depends on your data, your staff and how much you configure, and we have no verified benchmark to quote. Any product in that category carries a similar cost.
That is not a criticism. If the payoff is retiring four other tools and running everything in one place, it is a sound investment. But it belongs in the comparison, and it is also the reason switching away later is hard, which is worth thinking about before you buy.
Droplana's setup is small because the product is small. Create a client, add a checklist, send the portal link. There is no migration because there is nothing to migrate into. That is not cleverness; it follows from the product not doing the other things TaxDome does. Cheap to adopt and cheap to leave are the same property seen from two sides.
What it costs
TaxDome's US plan guidance, checked September 21, 2026, lists Pro at USD1,000 per seat per year on a one-year term. For a three-person firm where everyone needs staff access: 3 × USD1,000 = USD3,000 a year. Essentials is a single-user plan.
Droplana Practice is EUR490 a year plus tax for up to five staff including the owner, with unlimited clients. The two products do different amounts of work and are priced in different currencies, so this compares bills, not equivalent products. It excludes tax, migration and additional services.
The client side, where the models differ
TaxDome's pricing and feature comparison describes a web client portal as well as mobile apps. For clients who install the app, that is a strong experience with notifications and a proper home for the relationship. Check how clients sign in on your plan, and who makes sure each one completes that setup.
Droplana removes the account. Each client has one private portal, the same address for years. On the default Strict level they confirm their email on each new device, and the browser is remembered for 90 days. Controlled allows one-time or email magic links only; Relaxed also allows permanent links. Clients can also sign in with a Google or Microsoft account linked to their email.
On a phone there is a camera button beside the upload button, so a client photographs a paper receipt or an ID straight into the checklist item it belongs to. No app, no scanner.
Which is better depends on your clients, and neither client age nor app availability predicts it. Test the same first task with a few real clients in both.
Run the same first task in each product
Illustrative trial. Create a fictional bookkeeping client and request a bank statement, payroll summary and equipment receipt. Let the client upload the files, comment on a receipt that needs clarification and receive the completed report. For TaxDome, also test the billing and job workflow you intend to use; those are separate requirements from moving a file.

TaxDome's plans and features change. Check taxdome.com rather than trusting this page.
On due dates: a reminder is prepared two days before the date and on the date, and reaches the client with their next email, which can be later that day or the next day. The business can switch these reminders off and the client can opt out.
What Droplana does not do
The list is long here, and that is the point of the product rather than an apology for it.
- No practice management. No CRM, no jobs, no workflow, no pipelines.
- No time tracking, billing or invoicing.
- No tax software connectors. Documents stay in the portal; bulk downloads support ZIP up to 2 GB or 2,000 files.
- No mobile app. The portal is a web page, which is why nothing needs installing.
- Logo only, not full branding. Your logo appears in the portal header on every plan, but there is no custom domain or accent colour.
- Not a qualified e-signature. In-browser signing records who signed, when, from what IP and with which login, keeps the original next to the signed copy, and gives each signature a public verification page with a file-hash check. It is not certificate-based or qualified.
- Not general storage, an archive or internal team collaboration.
Who should pick which
Pick TaxDome if you are replacing how the firm runs rather than one tool; you want CRM, billing and workflow in the same place as the portal; you can absorb an implementation project; or you want one vendor for everything.
Pick Droplana if your practice software is fine and the document exchange is the broken part; you want to be running without a project; your clients should not have to create accounts or install apps; your client list grows faster than your headcount; or you need an EU company hosting in Germany.
There is also an honest middle answer: if you are already on TaxDome and it handles the exchange well, stay. The switching cost is larger than the benefit of a narrower tool, and we would rather say that than sell you a migration you will regret.

Questions before you choose
Is Droplana a full TaxDome alternative?
No. It is an option for the client document exchange part only. Droplana has no CRM, billing, job pipelines, time tracking or practice workflows. If you are already on TaxDome and it handles the exchange well, stay.
How do the prices compare for three staff?
TaxDome's US plan guidance, checked on 21 September 2026, lists Pro at 1,000 USD per seat per year on a one-year term, so three staff pay 3,000 USD a year. Droplana Practice is 490 EUR a year plus tax for up to five seats including the owner and unlimited clients. The scope and currencies differ, so this compares bills, not equivalent products.
Do clients need to install anything or create an account?
With Droplana, no. Clients open their private portal in a browser with no account or password. Strict mode, the default, verifies their email on a new device and remembers the browser for 90 days. TaxDome offers a web client portal as well as mobile apps, so an app install is not the only path there either; test the browser experience in both.
Where is each hosted?
Droplana stores files, comments and metadata on Hetzner infrastructure in Germany and is operated by Ubique d.o.o., a company registered in Croatia, EU, with a Data Processing Agreement on every plan. For TaxDome, confirm your account's region and the contract terms directly.
